We live in a new millennium where dotcom millionaires are made every day. So I will make earning a living online my solution, because it is the only way a parent can stay at home without fracturing the family budget. And I m not talking about paid surveys, stuffing envelopes, secret-shopper, or (god-forbid) telemarketing! Usually this is too little, too late.

You have to resist morning TV shows and learn to say no until friends and relatives realize that you do have a job with a schedule to keep. A structured day is almost mandatory, especially with small children. It does get easier when they are in school. Your day can match school hours and the many camp-options can eat up the summer months. And oh yes, you will be able to afford it by then.

So the next step is to search for the perfect home-business. Personally, I like independent sales so I don t have to share my profits with several upliners. I also like residual income to be the larger part of my earnings. What is residual income? It s when income continues to flow automatically as a result of your efforts months ago. It takes no further effort on your part and rewards you generously.

As these programs continue to proliferate, the individual webmaster needs to exercise a little restraint and avoid the temptation to go overboard by plastering these ads all over your website and thereby diluting your own primary message/proposition and confusing your hard earned visitor. When properly used, these ads are just ancillary or complementary content that you are providing to enhance the information and opportunities that you are providing to your visitor…if something happens to strike a responsive chord with your visitor, you might make a little pay per click money.

If properly used, these propagation programs can result in the classical “win-win” situation. However, if you over do it, this can quickly turn into a loss for you (the individual webmaster) and a win for your pay per click partners that are distributing the ads. As in many things, moderation is important.

It’s a constant sea of change, but the good things just keep on getting better! Stay alert, and light on your feet, and the opportunities will just keep on coming your way.

Now, it (almost) goes with saying that unsolicited, bulk, commercial email is - to put it delicately - a pain in the posterior. We’ve all been getting a lot of it already through our regular, bricks-and-mortar mailbox for years, so why should we have to put up with it over the Net?

Well, the short answer is, of course, we don’t! What do you do now with the SPAM in your real mail-box? So…do likewise with the electronic variety and leave it at that: problem gone.

Not “solved” of course, just gone - until next time. And, that gets pretty tedious and annoying, right? Right…

Enter the anti-SPAM legislators.

Are you going to start throwing week-old muffins at him, for having the audacity to interrupt your work? Or, knowing what your costs are, vis-a-vis the whole baking process, are you going to stop and think for a bit - and then start throwing the muffins, but only maybe? ;-) On the other hand, maybe your business isn’t doing too well, or you want to do better. Instead of throwing those muffins, maybe you should think about how you can make them last longer?

That’s a very simple scenario, but one that is repeated thousands of time, every day, in all forms of business. Indeed, it’s how many businesses must operate, being those types that sell only to other businesses. And, one of the most important tools of business is marketing, its proper operation and its effective maintenance.

With apologies to Robert Pirsig, I have slavishly copied the style of his very famous book - “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” - into the title of this article. That, of course, is where any further comparison stops.

I do, however, have a good reason for concocting my title.

Well. Now that you have read till this point, we assure that furthermore you will have something astonishing. Your nose for news would get a surprise in the sections that follow.

I recall that Mr Pirsig’s book explored themes for an improvement in self (in particular) and society (by inference), and one of those themes was QUALITY. Applied to every aspect of our existence, the quality of what we do can have a profound effect, from highly positive to lowly negative. Whatever we say and do, write and send, can have those effects, obviously.

So, maybe it’s not so much the quantity of SPAM that we all get that is the problem (although, there are limits, right!). Maybe, we should be concerned more with the quality - in the broadest sense - of the message? In particular, I’m thinking of messages that are relevant, appropriate, targeted and - dare I say it - even helpful!

However, the SPAM we all love to hate - shot-gun style, bulk commercial email, splattering all through the system - would obviously rate very low in the quality stakes, for most people (although, just quietly, I understand there is a secret network of SPAMmers who simply delight in sending each other into lowly orbit every day?), but business-to-business email must surely have its proper place. And, that would include all businesses, of course, not just Blue Chip and Silicon Valley…

Which, very soon (if not already), will begin to trouble the strident anti-spammers even more: as more and more people set up their own online e-businesses all over the world, there may come a time when there are more businesses online than there are mere consumers.

Hmmm…now, there’s a thought! ;-(o)

You are no doubt aware that many agencies - government and private - continue to grapple with the SPAM genie, but ultimately it is, I think, impossible to “get it back in the bottle”.

In that regard, I have read a number of articles - and have even received an unsolicited email about “permission marketing”! I have responded to some but, try as I might, none have returned with an unequivocal, “dyed-in-the-wool”, “shake-it-till-it-breaks” definition for permission marketing. I suspect it will be a while before I do.

Goodness gracious. Just debar yourself from the other vernacular chain of facts as this write-up is among the best of the bests. Your nose for news would get a surprise in the statements that follow.

But, I would be eternally grateful to anybody who can supply it!

Somebody once said, “Nothing happens until somebody sells something.” Well…fatuous as that may sound, we are all trying to “sell” something to somebody. Right?

Applications like InDesign, QuarkXpress, or Pagemaker are often used for page layouts. You have three applications to choose from:

  • Use the Adobe native PSD format when you need to retain transparency among Adobe applications.

  • Use Embedded Paths (EPS) as most desktop publishing applications accept the EPS format. In addition, EPS images support the use of embedded clipping paths. However, when used for transparency, the isolated object can only have hard edges, and again, it doesn t support partial transparency.

  • Use Alpha Channels (TIFF) when you want to define transparency in shades of gray. For page layout applications, the TIFF format is used for images with alpha channel transparency.

The revolution is just getting started and will begin to make its mark this year. By 2010, it will begin to take off. By 2025, it will be the standard for all TV viewing. It’s called Internet Protocol Television, or IPTV for short. IPTV works with a set-top box connected to any broadband interface and to a TV. It will allow users to choose among thousands (and eventually hundreds of thousands) of hours of programming, including movies, sports, classic TV, etc., and download their selections from the internet to the hard drive of the set-top box. Initially, set-top box hard drives will be able to store up to 300 hours of programming at a time, but capacity will expand as the technology becomes more refined. Also, download times will become shorter and shorter as broadband connection speeds become faster and faster. Eventually, a two-hour movie will be fully downloadable in a couple of minutes. Once the programs are downloaded to the hard drive, they can be viewed on the connected TV at any time via a DVR-type interface provided by the set-top box.

Besides the convenience of an all video-on-demand (VOD) environment, IPTV will provide a much wider range of programming than broadcast, cable, and satellite TV, or even major video chains, could ever provide. Because the programming is available from the internet, it will be almost completely unlimited and unconstrained. Programming from all over the world will be available along with every imaginable genre of niche programming. Also, previously unreleased independent films that have been sitting on shelves for years due to the lack of a distribution source will suddenly become available to the masses via IPTV. Films that previously could not be made at all will become a reality and be available on the IPTV services. Long forgotten films and TV shows will have new life breathed into them by IPTV. To top it all off, much of this programming will be eventually be available in high definition (HDTV)!

Most IPTV platforms will be divided into “channels”, but not the same kind of channels that we have grown accustomed to with traditional TV services. In this case, a “channel” is defined as a division of an IPTV service by individual content provider. Each content provider carried by a given IPTV platform will have its own guidelines for delivering programming on its channel. Some will provide their content for free to everyone who owns a given IPTV product. Some will be subscription based, i.e., everything on their channels will be available for a monthly or annual subscription. Others will be all pay-per-view. Still others will provide a combination of all of the above.

These developments in no way mean that all TV programming will become more risqu . While there will be plenty of risqu programming available to those who want it, there will an almost unlimited supply of family and religious programs available. With a veritable smorgasbord of entertainment options at your fingertips, there will be something available for all tastes. IPTV may not turn out to be a TV utopia, but it’s at least going to come close that ideal.
